The critical impact FTUX has on conversion

FTUX stands for First Time User Experience. It is a piece critical for conversion as a user's initial sentiment towards your product is largely delegated to their first steps within it, including flows such as signing up, onboarding, the first few emails you send them.

We had a problem with user conversion, only a small percentage of free trialers would convert to a paid plan by the time their trial ran out.

We saw Shopify's FTUX and noted how we lacked any guidance within our product on how to use it. Looking to our metrics, we filtered down user actions to 5 of the ones that best correlated with conversion and retention.

We packaged these 5 actions as todo list of sorts that would be presented on the first page you see after our onboarding flow.

Now there were clear next steps, their creativity was sparked, our customers could realize the endless possibilities of benefit Copilot had for them.

Needless to say, conversion, retention, and our understanding of customer signals shot up significantly.

We further reduced friction in onboarding through the introduction of magic links, and google auth. Allowing users to sign up by using their google account, and log in with the same method or by clicking a link we could email them. No need to type in or remember a password.
